RUKUNGIRI– The National Water and Sewarege Corporation (NWSC) Rukungiri are has decried increased water theft affecting works of the project in the District.

This was revealed over the weekend by Mr. Sam Kiggundu the area Manager NWSC during a visit by the Managing Director of National Water and Sewarege Corporation Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha.

Kiggundu revealed that NWSC loses 5 million litres of water per months equivalent to over 15million Ugandan shillings lost in water theft.

“Water theft must be stopped because it’s affecting our work in terms of service delivery since it denies others from our services”- Kiggundu

Kiggundu adds that the next step will be naming and ashaming those involved in water theft on addition to handing them over to police so that they are dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.

“We have informers and we are working with Uganda police and even as the body we’ve designed to tip everyone that helps us identify the culprits with UGX 50,000”- Kiggundu states.

The area manager also decried the unstable power supply that makes it hard for them to pump water on time as required by the community.

“We use electricity to pump the water. If it’s off, we are unable to. It our request to UMEME that they should atleast ensure a stable power supply if we’re to effectively serve the community with clean and safe water” Kigundu added.

The Rukungiri District CAO Elias Byamungu and Municipality Mayor Charles Makuru narrated to the NWSC MD that people still contract diseases related to unsafe water thus calling for a boost in the volume of public toilets so that the community reduces open space defecation.
