Relief in Rukiga as UNRA starts renovation of impassable roads

RUKIGA– Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started the rehabilitation of the Kamwezi Ring Road which was destructed by heavy rains on Wednesday 31st March 2021.

The heavy downpour that started at around 11am saw floods gather stones and logs from the hills that blocked most of the roads in Kamwezi sub-county.

The most affected were the road that goes via Rwenyangye parish, Omunkore bridge which was partly washed away, Nyaruhanga, Murutare, Nyamabare, Buziba and some other bridges which were washed away.

Residents of Kamwezi who talked to our reporter said they were only left with a single alternative of going through Ntungamo district in Rwentobo to access their homes since the roads in their area were impassable.

This prompted the immediate intervention of the Rukiga district local government to write to UNRA on Thursday 1st April 2021 requesting them to fix the emergencies.

The letter was signed by the district vice chairperson Mr Kwarikunda Micheal Mbareeba.

This week, ran a story about the sorry State of the roads in the District and how they were affecting the community.

However our reporter’s visit to Kamwezi Sub County on Friday morning found the graders already working on some of the impassable roads and washed away bridges.
