Rukungiri based journalist Rhona Desire survives arson attack


RUKUNGIRI– Yet to be known arsonist on Monday night set ablaze the house of a renowed Rukungiri journalist Rhona Desire in a suspected arson attack.

The arsonist who is said to have done the act at around 04:00hrs entered her family courtyard in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality and knocked on one of the windows, called the owner’s name demanding for money failure of which he would lit the house.

It’s at this point that Rhona was alerted by one of the family members, picked a cellphone and called the Rukungiri District Police requesting for help.

Upon hearing that Police was being called to save the situation, the arsonist who claimed to have already spread house with petrol finally lit the house.

“I got my phone, rung the Police at the top of my voice little did I know that the other side of my house was already lit” Rhona Desire narrated to our reporter.

The fire destroyed a number of household equipment including mattresses, clothes, televisions, beds among others equivalent to millions of money.

Rhona is well known for her radio show “The Love zone” a late night program that airs on the airwaves of Rukungiri town based 96.9 Radio Rukungiri (Monday – Thursday 9pm to midnight) and operates a famous hang out place “Dee liquor” bar in the town centre.

None of the four house occupants sustained injuries in the attack since the Police put off the fire before it could finish off the whole house.

By press time, she was heading to the Police to make a statement.
