One dead, others critically ill in Rukungiri arson attack

SUICIDAL PROTEST: Another boda boda cyclist sets himself on fire at Kireka Police Station

RUKUNGIRI– One person has been confirmed dead, three others are nursing severe injuries in Rukungiri District after a suspected arson attack.

The deceased is Batwaza Porikaripo 85, a resident of Nkanga village, Ndere Parish in Ruhinda Sub county, Rukungiri District.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson told this reporter that on Friday night at around 10PM, unknown people went to Porikaripo’s home, called his wife telling her to get out and receive items that had been sent from Kampala. 

On opening the door, they immediately threw in an object which contained fire and the lady ran burning into her bedroom which resulted into the burning of the whole house.

Maate adds that the burnt house had 4 occupants who were later on rushed to Case Medicals Rukungiri where the family head Batwaza Porikaripo died from on Saturday. 

Dr Dickson Nuwasasira who is attending to the victims at Case Medicals told this reporter that Porikaripo succumbed to respiratory failure and severe inhalation burns.

“I can confirm that the old man died of Respiratory failure secondary to severe inhalation burns” Dr Dickson narrated.

Sources from the village indicate that the attack could have been ignited by land wrangles.

Rukungiri Central Police station has already registered an Arson case on Reference number CRB 888/2021 as the hunt for arsonists and their motive commence.
