Former Daily Monitor Rwenzori bureau chief succumbs to COVID-19

MBARARA– The media freternity in Western Uganda are mourning the demise of the former Daily Monitor employee Felix Basiime.

Basiime who is also a father to celebrated Western Uganda vocalist T. Paul lost the battle to COVID-19 on Thursday night at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

Before working in Rwenzori, Basiime served as Monitor Publications Ltd’s bureau chief in Mbarara. His reporting has primarily focused on environmental issues and tourism, with an emphasis on oil, gas, and other extractive industries.

Basiime graduated from The Uganda Pentecostal University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication and holds four certificates in environmental journalism from Makerere University. 

He received professional training in both data journalism and health reporting through the African Centre for Media Excellence.

Basiime won multiple of internal awards at the Daily Monitor, and his reporting was recognized by the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). 

He has been a member of the Water & Environment Media Network Uganda (WEMNET), a professional NGO of journalists reporting on water and environment in Uganda.
