Man arrested for exhuming 18 bodies in Tororo District

TORORO– The Police have arrested Alawi Katalo for the role played in the exhumation of 18 bodies in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District.

According to a family member, the Standard Gauge Railway running from Malaba to Gulu currently under construction affected some persons and have been advised to relocate to new places in not more than three months.

As a result, Katalo the family administrator, purchased a piece of land from a 50 year old Okumu Joseph in Akworot South Village, Akoret Parish, Mukuju Sub County in Tororo District, where he would relocate the bodies of his relatives from the current cemetery.

In the early hours of 18th September 2021, at around 4.00am Katalo together with his friends who are still at large transported 18 bodies in a truck and buried them in potato mounds.

The Akworo Village Chairperson Michael Ojulu said that they were not informed of the relocation arrangements, a situation that created a lot of tension among the residents.

Confirming the incident, Moses Mugwe the police Spokesperson for Bukedi Region, said that the suspects did not have authority to carry out the exhumation and disturbing the peace of the dead.

“We are recording statements from Katalo in connection with exhuming bodies without following the right procedures,” Mugwe told the journalists.

Meanwhile, the Police have appealed to the residents and general public to remain calm as the investigations of the matter are ongoing.
