Man held in Rukungiri for attempted murder in suspected human sacrifice


RUKUNGIRI– The Police in Rukungiri district are holding a man in his 40’s accused of attempting to kill a two and half years old baby girl.

The suspect according to Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson is Yonah Karigye aka Mukiga who has been a casual worker at Nahurira Ainia’s home in Kakinga cell, Rwakirungura parish in Buyanja sub county Rukungiri district.

Mukiga however originates from Rugyeyo Sub County in Kanungu district. Maate says that Police got information from Oreeba Ester a resident of the above address who saw Mukiga on Monday morning at around 7am carrying a baby heading to his home. 

It’s alleged that one Oreeba 20 years resident of Kakinga village moved at around 7Am on Monday 25th October 2021 in the neighborhood at the home of the late  Nahulira Alex to borrow an axe. 

Upon arrival at the home, she Saw Mukiga a worker in that home pulling a young child (victim) whose private part was already cut with intestines hanging outside and crying at a very low tone.

According to Maate, Oreeba having identified the victim by appearance, moved to the mother Kiconco Rebecca who identified the victim as Maryscent Kagirl, female juvenile aged two and a half years, who had disappeared from her home on Monday morning towards 7Am.

The village Chairperson Musasizi Benon gathered residents who arrested Kaligye and handed him to Buyanja Police Station from where a case of attempted Murder was preferred.

Maate adds that the victim was picked from an isolated banana plantation at a distance from the suspects home and taken to Karoli Lwanga Referral Hospital Nyakibale and later to Mbarara Regional Referral hospital.

According to him, the Suspect Mukiga aged 36 years is currently detained at CPS Rukungiri as Police inquiries are at hand under reference number CRB 1464/2021′ to establish the motive.
