One dead, millions lost in Mbarara City bus park kiosks morning fire


MBARARA– The Police in Mbarara have finally given an update on the fire that gutted Timber workshops in the city on Monday morning.

According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, information of a fire out break on Timber  workshops along Akiiki Nyabongo road in Mbarara city was received at Bus Park police post.

Preliminary police investigations have it that on 25th October 2021 at around 3:28am, Gilbert Awuyo a private guard attached to grade one security services Ltd was patrolling the lower Bus park gate  and he saw alot of smoke from timber workshops (Mbarara General works) located on Mbaguta street on the upperside and Akiki Nyabongo street on lower side. He immediately reported the incident to Mbarara Bus park police post.

A case file of arson was opened at the post and Rwizi Regional fire team rushed to the scene but they failed to contain the fire which forced them to call for re-enforcement from Bushenyi fire station, Ministry of works and other private fire personnels who responded immediately and fire was later put out.
           The scene of crime was visited by RPC, DPC, OC CID, scenes of Crime Officer and Homicide team of Mbarara Police station and retrieved a body of a one Sam Sonko believed to be in around 18 years a casual worker at the workshops on Mbaguta street which was burnt beyond recognition.

According to Kasasira, it was established that 23 timber workshops were destroyed during the fire, one Motor cycle and a motor vehicle registration UAQ 002J Harrier were all burnt to ashes.

The Rwizi region police spokesperson noted the cause of fire is not yet established and a case of arson has since been recorded at Mbarara CPS under reference number CRB 1542/2021 as inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
