Rt Rev Godfrey Loum consecrated 8th Bishop of Northern Uganda

NEWS– Thousands of people on Sunday flocked to St. Philip’s Cathedral in Gulu for the consecration and enthronement of Rt. Rev. Godfrey Loum as the 8th Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Uganda.

The function was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda The Most Rev Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu together with many Bishops in attendance as well as political and cultural leaders. 

Retired Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi preached from Mark 4:35 where he said that, in life there will always be storms, and reminded Christians that they should remember that Jesus is in the boat with them and will speaks to the wind, calm storms, adding that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 

Bishop Orombi challenged the new Bishop to be a messenger of God, who heals, provides to his people and also be a shepherd to all people and bless them, not to curse them.

Archbishop Orombi also asked the new Bishop to be a peacemaker when so many families are experiencing conflicts and run well with the baton he has received from retired Bishop Johnson Gakumba on top of respecting elders and receive wisdom from them.

The main preacher at the consecration of newly enthroned Bishop of Nothern Uganda was Retired Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi.

Speaking at the function, the retiring Bishop Johnson Gakumba thanked the many people who have supported him in his vision of lifting up the Diocese in the immediate post-war season.

The newly consecrated Bishop Loum recognized that the war had been over for at least ten years, but was still inside families through long-term trauma and invisible wounds that have led to increased alcoholism and addictions to try to medicate the pain. Increased crime, Gender-based violence, and land grabbing are further signs of the long-term impact of trauma. 

He called for the dependency mindset a disabling culture that could only be defeated by a mindset change and quoted from the New Testament, 2 Tim 4:1-2, saying he is committing himself to Preach the Word,  to be prepared in season and out of season to correct, rebuke, and encourage, with great patience and careful instruction.

In his Charge, Bishop Loum pledged to help people to overcome the bondage of anger, bitterness, unforgiveness and also teach life skills for youth to meet their own needs;.

He also pledged to promote workable strategies of crime prevention, support resettlement of prisoners, resolve underlying issues of land grabbing, mentor children and youth and partner with government, especially in the Parish Development Model 

Bishop Loum also pledged to pomote the Biblical view of marriage as one man and one woman in faithful and monogamous relationship, equip families to build a family altars so that the Word of God can bring hope and healing, encourage Christians to faithful stewardship to support clergy welfare and provide decent housing for them as well as promoting ICT in Gospel proclamation and Ministry.

As expected he committed himself to remain obedient to the authority of Scripture and assured the church and community that they will reject any misinterpretations of Scripture.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Chief Guest and appealed to the Acholi to unite to defeat the breakdown of unity and reclaim Acholi culture of mutual support among the people and reminded the Christians that they are their “brother’s keeper,”.

The President donated a vehicle to the newly consecrated Bishop to facilitate his pastoral work which Speaker Oulanyah said would be delivered to Gulu in early December 2021.
