Rukungiri man stabbed to death hunting for grasshoppers


RUKUNGIRI– The police in Rukungiri have initiated investigations to ascertain the facts behind the death of a 28 year old man.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson identified the deceased as Barnabas Kyaritorana, a peasant and a resident of Rwakagoro village, Bigaga Ward, Rwerere Town Council in Rukungiri district.

The Kigezi Region police spokesperson revealed that the case was reported to Police by Geofrey Tariyani 68 the area village chairperson.

It’s alleged that the deceased left home on the 21st November 2021 at around 9:00pm to Rwerere Town Council to catch grasshoppers but never returned till around 5:00am on the 22nd November 2021 when the mother one Annah Twinomugisha was awakened by an alarm from him that he was being killed.

It is said that when the mother tried to move out to rescue her son by opening her bedroom’s window, a mob of people who were beating her son threatened to kill her if she dared to open the act that made her to close the window and remain indoors up to around 6:30pm when she got out and found the son dying in their plantation a few meters from the home and she called the village chairperson.

The chairman informed the police at Rwerere Police Post and a case of murder by stabbing was preferred vide SD reference 04/22/11/2021.

A team of detectives, DCID/O, CIO, SOCO, and other personnel visited the scene of crime but the Canine couldn’t be introduced as the villagers had crowded at the scene

The body was examined at the scene and handed over to the relatives for burial.

Information obtained by police from the scene was that the deceased has been a serial thief.

Police inquiries into the matter are ongoing and the case of murder by stabbing was recorded at Rukungiri CPS on registration number CRB 1556/2021.
