KANUNGU– The Police in Kanungu have deployed heavily at Great Lakes Regional University at Bushura following yesterday’s announcement by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) directing the closure of the University for one month to allow investigations take place without interference.
According to a letter dated November 23rd 2021, and signed by the Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education Prof Mary Okwakol, the University was ordered to close by Wednesday midday which is today.
According to Prof Okwakol, the one month closure was reached in a meeting that took place on Monday which established non compliance at Great Lakes Regional University.
According to the letter which is addressed to the Vice Chancellor, the non compliance issues were based on contestation of the ownership, poor management and governance and other recurrence issues of non governance of the University.
Prof Okwakol directed that in such circumstances, the management, staff, and students must vacate the University premises by 12 noon today Wednesday 24th November 2021, and should only return when National Council for Higher Education communicates clearing the operations at the University to resume.
The letter that was copied to the Minister of Education and Sports, the Minister of State for Higher Education, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education, Chairperson NCHE, RDC Kanungu, DPC Kanungu, Dr Hamlet Mbabazi Kabushenga and Honest Wikins Natukwasa, requested the RDC to provide security to the premises.
The Police have since deployed heavily at the University in anticipation of any occurrence that may result into destruction of property at the University as students leave the premises as directed by the National Council of Education.
Our reporter who is at the University in Bushura confirmed that the Police increased security surveillance starting last night after it became clear that the Institution had been ordered to close for a month.
When contacted, the Great Lakes Regional University Executive Director Honest Wilkins Natukwasa confirmed having received the communication from Prof Okwakol to halt the operations at the University and will abide by the order as they wait for court on their fate.
Efforts to get a comment from Dr Hamlet Mbabazi Kabushenga who is contesting the ownership of the University were futile as he could not respond to our reporters repeated calls.
