KISORO– The Nyakainama Sub-county Health assistant officer in Kisoro district is on spot over alleged extortion of money from traders in Mubuga trading centre.
According to the traders, the accused is Molly Nyiramutuzo. Traders allege that on 24th November 2021, Nyiramutuzo who was escorted by police officers from Nyakainama sub-county stormed their area and started collecting money from them.
Traders narrated that the accused collected money ranging from Ugx 20,000 to 70,000 from each of them for a medical form to show that they have been medically examined and fit for operating different businesses.
They noted that those who tried to resist paying the money were roughed up by the police officers who had accompanied the officer.
Traders also claim that the even though they paid the money, the health assistant officer did not issue them any receipts and the money each paid kept varying an act that made them suspicious that it might be extortion.
It is said that the medical forms were sold to the traders without subjecting them to any medical check ups to ascertain their health status. Upon contact by our reporter, the accused officer declined to comment on the allegations.
Domis Ntawe, the Nyakinama sub-county chief and Charles Bigira Kamuhanda the sub-county chairperson said that they are not aware of the money being collected from traders and promised to follow up the grievances.
Emmanuel Ndayisaba, the sub county district male councilor described the money collected from traders as illegal and asked residents to keep calm as he follows up on the matter.
He also advised his electorate to always consult their leaders if they suspect anyone extorting money from them for government services.
The issued medical forms accessed by our reporter bear a stamp of assistant health officer Nyakinama sub county.
Our efforts to get a comment from District Health Officer Nsabiyunva Stephen were futile as all our calls on his known phone went unanswered.
