KANUNGU– The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon Matia Kasaija has said that the government of Uganda will prioritize the construction of irrigation schemes in Kanungu district to boost agricultural production.
Minister Kasaija made the remarks on Saturday November 27th 2021after touring the 15 Acre coffee farm of Bikorwomuhangi John in Bukorwe village, Nyanga Sub-county in Kanungu District and also meeting Coffee Haulers and Processors at Meizimera in Kihihi Town Council.
Minister Kasaija noted that Nyanga which lies in the rift valley has good soils that favour production of good coffee for export but it needs constant water supply for farmers to sustain their production and will therefore help in lobbying for irrigation systems.
He hailed the farmers in the area who have taken on themselves to ensure that they produce the best coffee that’s meeting International market standards and pledged government’s support in terms of fertiliser and extension services.
Minister Kasaija said that he was impressed by Coffee Processing plant owned by Moses Twaha in Meizimera and promised to lobby from the government to avail him more equipment that can process, grade and pack coffee as well as rice to International standards since Ugandan coffee is much preferred world wide.
He observed that the construction of Kanungu – Rukungiri Road will boost trade across the border and ensure ready market for agricultural products from Kanungu District at a higher price.
Minister Kasaija was accompanied by Minister for ICT and National Guidance Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi, Kinkizi West Member of Parliament Hon James Ruggi Kaberuka, Kanungu Woman MP Hon Patience Kinshaba Nkunda, Kanungu District boss Eng Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo, the RDC Hajji Shafique Ssekandi and his Deputy Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju among many others.
