Uganda Cranes Defender Murushid Juuko retires from National team after 7 years


SPORT– The rate at which Uganda Cranes National team senior players are resigning from duty worries sports lovers in the country.

This comes after an Express FC attached senior hard working defender Murushid Juuko resigned from the National team duty after seven years of serious business at the Cranes.

Juuko’s retirement follows a serie of many senior players who resigned from the National duty in a short time and they include skipper Denis Onyango and midfielders Hassan Wasswa and Mike Azira.

In his resignation letter dated 13th January 2022 directed to FUFA, Juuko said that he has served the country enough and it’s time for him to call it a day with Uganda Cranes.

Juuko who made his Uganda Cranes debut on 11 July 2014 against Seychelles and his last match was on September 6 2021 against Mali in the World Cup Qualifiers at St. Mary’s stadium Kitende where he was sent off for an elbow and later fined Ugx 20m by FIFA.

According to close sources who preferred anonymity have it that Juuko who could not afford to pay the fine was not happy with the way FUFA handled his situation after he visited the FUFA offices in Mengo to see President Moses Magogo over the matter but the meeting was not possible and was referred to National Team officer Paul Mukatabala.

Juuko’s resignation came at a time when the Uganda Cranes is in Asia for a tour and have held Iceland on Wednesday in their first of five friendly matches.

According to his letter, Juuko noted that he wishes the Uganda Cranes the best of luck in their future endeavours revealed that he will now concentrate his club football with Express.

Here is what you need to know about Murushid Juuko

He was born on 14th April 1994 in Entebbe in Central Uganda.

Juuko is 1.85m tall equivalent to 6ft 1 inch. He plays as a centre-back and is currently playing for Express FC in Uganda.

He started his senior career in 2009 and has now played for different clubs which include Bunamwaya, Victoria University, Simba, Wydad, Express FC.

Murushid Juuko started his National career with Uganda U20 in 2011, played for U23 in 2013 and National senior team career in 2014.

Juuko was part of the Uganda Cranes team that beat Comoros to end the 39-year old AFCON Jinx and has represented Uganda at two Africa Cup of Nations tournament that’s in 2017 and 2019.

The rock-solid defender also won the 2015 CECAFA Cup with Uganda Cranes in Ethiopia.
