Over 300 Rukungiri families displaced by floods

Floods devastate Rwenshama Landing site, residents count losses

RUKUNGIRI– Properties worth millions and homes have been destroyed by floods from River Nchwera in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri district.

Over 300 families were also displaced by huge volumes of water that also cut off the road through queen Elizabeth National Park before penetrating into Rweshama trading centre.

Gideon Ntungura the Bwambara sub county district councilor who also doubles as the district secretary for finance told our reporter that the floods are as a result of the heavy rains that hit the area leading to increase in water levels of River Nchwera.

Ntungura calls upon the district water office, district natural resource and environment offices to join hands with Uganda wild life Authority and see how best they can do the physical plan of Rweshama
trading centre to stop future similar damages.

Keneth Niwagaba Rweshama parish local chairperson says that the floods have not only left people homeless, but also have health implications
as most of the pit latrines have been destroyed which may hike waterborne diseases.
