12 suspects netted disguising as traffic Police officers to extort money from motorists


KAMPALA– The Police at Central Police station Kampala on Wednesday May 11th 2022 arrested twelve people suspected to have been illegally impounding motorcycles and vehicles purporting as traffic Police Officers before extorting money from the suspects.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Spokesperson, the operation was carried out in the affected areas of Clocktower and Biwologoma where numerous complaints had been registered.

Police was forced to conduct the operation following numerous complaints from motorists, especially boda boda riders who have been accusing people in civilian wear of impounding their motorcycles along clock tower area and later extorting money from them before releasing the illegally impounded motorcycles.

 According to him, the 12 arrested suspects include three KCCA enforcement officers whom the riders accuse of colluding with others to extort money from them.

ASP Owoyesigyire adds that a chain used to lock down the motorcycles in un gazetted places has also been recovered and taken as evidence.

Owoyesigyire noted that the operation is still ongoing and the public should take note that only officers in uniform should stop and impound your motorcyce.

“In case you are affected by such a situation, report the matter to the DPC, Central Police Station or Officer incharge of traffic” he added.

The arrested suspects will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as investigations on them are done according to the police Mouthpiece.
