Kabale NIRA branch stuck with over 20k unclaimed National IDs

NEWS– The Greater Kabale District National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office is stuck with more than 20,000 unclaimed National Identity cards.

The information was revealed today by the Kabale district NIRA Office Registrations officer, Isaac Tweterane during an interview with our reporter at Kabale district NIRA offices in Kabale Municipality.

Tweterane said that over 20,000 identity cards have not been collected by the owners despite their efforts of taking the National identity cards to sub-county headquarters.

Tweterane said that most of the uncollected IDs are for students and Ugandans staying in far districts. Tweterane says that some people have not realized the importance of National Identity cards and called upon local leaders to mobilize their voters to pick them.

Getting a national ID is free of charge and to replace a lost National ID was recently hiked to Ugx 500,000 from Ugx 50,000 though Parliament is still holding the Stakeholders to check on the amounts. The mass registration for the National IDs started in 2014.

IDs are valid for a period of ten years. Although they are currently being offered for free, Ugandans might need to pay for renewal in 2024.
