Tears as 5 Kinyara Sugar works employees perish in road accident


NEWS– An early Saturday morning accident has claimed lives of Five people all employees of Kinyara Sugar Limited.

The accident according to eyewitness happened at Bujenje trading centre in Bujenje County, Masindi district after a lorry that was transporting Kinyara sugar limited cane cutters from Kinywamurara village overturned.

An injured Victim who preferred anonymity told our reporter at Masindi district general hospital that the driver who was over speeding failed to negotiate the corner and the vehicle overturned.

Peter Unega who sustained minor injuries explained that immediately after the incident, the driver escaped and they were rescued by the good Samaritans who called for emergency vehicles and ambulances.

The truck was ferrying over 70 cane cutters and it’s alleged that five died on spot, over 40 are nursing wounds at Masindi district general hospital while the critically injured were evacuated to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.

Caroline Amongin, the public relations officer-PRO Kinyara sugar limited says the vehicle that was involved in the fatal accident belongs to one of their contractors identified as Blessing Asiimwe who was transporting workers for sugarcane cutting.

She says they immediately mobilized ambulances that transferred the dead bodies to Masindi hospital while the injured have also been evacuated and are currently admitted at Masindi hospital.

Amongin says they are doing everything possible to reach out to the families of the deceased persons and those injured.

ASP Julius Allan Hakiza the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident but couldn’t ascertain the particulars of the deceased.
