KABALE- The Ministry of Education and Sports has given a grace period of ten years for all teachers in the teaching profession to upgrade to a Bachelor’s Degree level.
This was contained in the Minister of Education and sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni’s, message as the guest of honor to 1,388 graduands at National Teachers College Kabale read for her by the Ag. Commissioner Teacher, Instructor Education and Training Jonathan Kamurana during the 11th graduation ceremony held at college premises in Kabale district on Friday.
Minister Janet Kataaha Museveni said that according to the new national teacher’s policy, the minimum qualification for teachers in Uganda is a degree.
She noted that the aim of the National Teacher Policy (NTP) is to professionalize the teaching profession to levels comparable with other professions like medical, engineering, legal, and accounting among others and provide a comprehensive framework for the development and management of the teaching profession to improve teaching and learning in the entire education system.
She asked graduates not to fall into slumber but rather look for opportunities to enroll for a bachelor’s degree, the minimum requirement for teaching profession.

The vice chancellor, Kyambogo University Prof Eli Katunguka retaliated against graduates to fight and work to have the appetite to upgrade studies to upper levels of education to seek for higher opportunities.
Katunguka thanked parents for investing in Education to make sure that their children study. He cautioned graduates against destructive behaviors, taking of alcohol, betting and usage of drugs.

The chairperson governing council National teacher’s college, Kabale Prof. James Tumwine decried the capitation grant that was fixed years ago stressing that inflation has eroded its current value. He requested for a review of this grant in order to ease the burden of caring for students at the college.

The national teacher’s college principal, Dr. Moses Wambi asked graduates to avoid being prisoners of self pity, sorrow and lamentation but rather become great achievers through logical planning and hard work.
