King Oyo unveils Tooro Kingdom ICT Resource Center

NEWS- The King of Tooro His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Rukidi IV has laid a foundation stone for the construction of Tooro Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) as part of the Kingdom 25 year Development Agenda which is aimed at promoting social economic development, transformation and prosperity of the people in the Kingdom.

The function took place at the Orukurato Hall in Fortportal Tourism City May 20th at a function which was graced by the Minister of State for Investment and Privatisation Hon Evelyn Anite and other stakeholders.

During the function, King Oyo together with Minister Anite laid a foundation stone for the construction of a fully fledged ICT Resource Center which when completed will provide the digitalised skills that is needed to transform the development in the Kingdom. 

Earlier, King Oyo and Minister Anite launched Tooro Youth Skilling Center which has been established in the Kingdom with support from Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) which is focused on providing skills to the youth in innovations and entrepreneurship. 

The Minister for Youth in Tooro Kingdom Edward Kasaija said that the Skilling Center has been established to meet the investment needs following the government decision to open 25 Industrial Parks across the country.

Kasaija said that by the time the Kabarole Industrial Park is put in place by Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Tooro Kingdom youth will have attained skills that will be at hand to take up opportunities that come with establishment of the industrial revolution.

In his response King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Rukidi IV thanked UIRI Executive Director Prof Charles Kwesiga for partnering with Tooro Kingdom to establish the Skilling Training Facility whose focus is to ensure that every youth in Tooro Kingdom is trained and skilled in production in other centres or can establish their own businesses. 

The Skilling Training Center for Youth is one of the 8 focus areas King Oyo highlighted in his 25 year Development Agenda that was launched in September 2021 at the Royal Palace  in Fortportal Tourism City.

Other areas of focus in the 25 year development agenda include, promoting, preserving and protecting the culture and heritage of Tooro Kingdom, Investingin Agriculture for food security, poverty eradication, creation of employment and wealth.

Other areas of focus include promoting tourism as a powerful vehicle for economic growth, job creation and improved livelihoods, climate change, environment and water conservation, Health for All, Ending HIV/AIDS by 2030, intercultural partnership for tackling the pressing challenges and achieving sustainable Development.

While addressing the dignatries and stakeholders who graced the ICT ground breaking event King Oyo said that he was hopeful that digital transformation will bring about social development in Tooro Kingdom and thanked all stakeholders who have joined to see this become successful. 

Some of the notable stakeholders in this transformation process were named as Uganda Industrial Research Institute,  Uganda Investment Authority, National Housing Corporation, Equity Bank, Fortportal Tourism City, Members of Parliament from Tooro Kingdom, Kabalore District Local Government among many others.

Speaking at the event, Uganda Investment Authority Chairman Morrison Rwakakamba observed that King Oyo vision for transforming Tooro Kingdom was the same as that of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of building a self sustaining economy.

Minister Anite told the Tooro King and subjects as a whole that her Ministry will give the support required to ensure that the King’s Developmental Agenda becomes a reality because dital world is the way to go in order to compete in the fast changing modern world.

Minister Anite pledged to contribute 500 bags of cement towards the construction of the ICT Resource Center and also to contact President Museveni to support the initiative. Minister Anite was earlier inoculated into Tooro Kingdom culture by giving her Empako Abwooli.

The function was also attended by Fortportal Tourism City Members of Parliament led by Hon Ruhunda and Hon Bright Amooti all who described the King as visionary whose mission  is pro people and will change lives.
