Rukungiri Magistrates court bails out anti Skyrocketing commodity prices protesters


RUKUNGIRI– The Grade one magistrate court in Rukungiri presided over by His worship Wakayemba Martin on Thursday May 26th 2022 released on bail 5 opposition activists who were recently arrested for protesting skyrocketing commodity prices.

These were arrested on Wednesday 18th May 2022 along Karegyesa road by a combined Security force of the Police and Army that was deployed to quell a planned protest against the increasing commodity prices in Rukungiri.

Those released are Kamusiime Boaz 24 , a resident of Butagatsi cell, Kinyasano ward, Western Division who is also the Municipal youth councilor and the deputy municipal speaker, Banini Moris 22, a resident of Bwoma, Northern A ward, Western Division, Akampurira Moses 22, a resident of Kiyindi cell, Rwakabengo  ward, Southern division.

Others are Kanyesigye B 33, a resident of Kaceeka cell, Northern A ward, Western Division a boda boda rider at omukihindi boda boda stage and Turyahabwe Abel 26, a resident of Kakabada, Western Division all in Rukungiri Municipality.

Prosecution alleges that they were arrested for causing sound pollution and accusing the government of failing to regulate the prices of commodities.

His worship Wakayemba Martin released them on Ugx 100,000 (One hundred thousand shillings cash bail and the sureties were bonded at One Million shillings (1,000,000) not cash.

The five will return to court on 24 th June 2022.

Shortly after securing bail, Kamusiime Boaz decried excessive torture they went through during their detention however stressing that this will not stop them from protesting against the current economic situation.
