UNATU clarifies on circulating statement calling off teachers strike

KAMPALA– Uganda National Teachers Union has dispelled a statement making rounds on social media tagging them to have called off industrial action that started on June 15th 2022.

According to the statement dubbed fake was attributed to UNATU Secretary General Filbert  Baguma Bates which he later dispelled.

,The statement had it that the decision to call off the strike was reached in the UNATU Executive Meeting that took place today June 28th to allow discussion with the government. 

The Statement added that the decision to go back to classes is a requirement of the Education Service (Teachers Professional Code of Conduct) legal notice No 11 of 2012, Education Service Act No 13 of 2002.

“Please disregard this information circulating around, all information shall be sent through both video and officially written and signed in ink by the General Secretary” a statement from UNATU reads.

It came at a time when UNATU Executive is due to meet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni once again to discuss the way forward for both science and arts.

A few hours after the Permanent Secretary of Public Service Ms Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwire invited the UNATU Executive to a meeting scheduled for July 1st 2022.

Ms Musingwire said that the meeting would focus on the issues raised by the teachers which sparked off the industrial action on 15th June.
