Students overpower Machete wielding thug, injures himself in scuffle and succumbs to injuries


NEWS– The Police in Kabale Municipality are investigating circumstances surrounding a case of aggravated robbery.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman ASP Elly Maate told journalists August 4th 2022 evening that the incident took place the previous night at Makanga cell in Northern Ward in Kabale Municipality.

It’s reported that Byamukama Innocent, Arinanye Erasmus, Asiimire Ranger and Naturinda Francis all students of Kabale Institute of Health Science, while sleeping in their hostel were attacked by 3 unknown armed thugs with pangas and were robbed of their properties which includes, text books, relevant documents, matresses among others.

The said suspects managed to escape from the scene using motor vehicle Registration Number UAR 279F which was earler alleged to have been stolen from the parking yard at Royal Comfort Bar.

There after, the victims made alarm which attracted other students who all pursued the said suspect and they managed to intercept the vehicle at short distance from the hostel.

Maate explained that it was at this point that one of the suspect identified as Kato Gumisiriza Shafik got out to fight the pursuers using his panga.

He was however over powered and arrested but got injured by his panga as Police was notified and arrived at the scene for further management while the other two suspects drove the alleged stolen motor vehicle up to Rwakaraba Trading Centre where they abandoned it but took off with the stolen properties.

Maate said that both reports of aggravated robbery and theft of the vehicle were registered and the suspect Kato Gumisiriza Shafik who had been rescued by the Police and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for medication succumbed to injury wounds moments later.

The body of the deceased was transfered to the Mortuary for postmortem examination as Police continue with investigations hoping to identify the other two suspects on the run and have them arrested.

A case of aggravated robbery was registered at Kabale Central Police Station under reference number CRB 544/2022 as inquiries continue.
