BUSHENYI– A week’s exercise for restoration of Nyamirembe wetland in Bushenyi district has officially been launched.
The wetland that is being restored crosses sub counties of Nkanga, Nyabubare, Kizinda town council and beyond.
While presiding over the function on Monday, the Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner Jane Asiimwe Muhindo called on the people who planted trees in the wetlands to immediately cut them before government comes up.
Asiimwe said that the campaign will bear results if the communities are well sensitized on how to sustain, refrain from wetlands and also given alternative livelihood projects and at the same time bring local leaders on board to ensure wetlands are not degraded.
The assistant Commissioner in charge of wetlands Ministry of Water and Environment Vicent Barugahare said that people who got land titles for their lands in the wetlands before 1995 are protected by National Wetlands management law that pushes the government to either consider compensation before they leave the wetlands or any other plan.
Vicent Katate, the district Environmental Officer and also the Focal person for the wetland restoration project in Bushenyi district, said that Nyamirembe wetland hosts a multi billion water project of Kitagata which needs to be fully protected.
