Police officer guns down civilian in Bushenyi district

BUSHENYI– A police officer has been arrested for shooting one person dead and injuring another in  Bushenyi district.

The deceased is Kyabonero Naboth 30, a resident of Buhimba cell, Kitwe ward, Kyabugimbi Town council in Bushenyi district who was shot dead by SPC Bishaniko George attached to Kyabugimbi Police station on Thursday 17th November 2022. 

The victim who was rushed to Kyabugimbi Health Center IV is Kabosa Bafa 30, a resident of Kyeigomba B, Kyeigomba Parish in Kyabugimbi Subcounty, Bushenyi district.

The incident took place on Thursday at around 3:30pm at Nyakibonera Trading Center, Kyeigomba B cell, Kyeigomba Parish when SPC Bishaniko George had gone to arrest Kabosa Bafa for alleged bar breaking and theft. 

The suspect was found with a gang of people smoking opium, playing cards and drinking local brew (waragi) and when the suspect saw the armed Police constable, he picked a sharp panga and swung it with an intention of cutting the officer.

In trying to defend himself, the officer shot the suspect on the leg, the bullet went through and hit Kyabonera on the left side of the stomach killing him instantly forcing others to run for their dear lives.

The Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson SP Marcial Tumusiime told our reporter that the scene was visited by a team of detectives led by OC Station ASP Nyombi Peter who conveyed the deceased’s body to Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.

Eye witnesses told this reporter that the deceased, victim and others who ran away are known criminals in the area.

SP Tumusiime revealed that No.032 SPC Bishaniko George was arrested and the gun he used to shoot also recovered an exhibited. The panga which the suspect was holding was also recovered.
