KAMPALA- Uganda Prisons Service authorities have been warned against redundancy during the ongoing World Cup tournament period that might expose them to attacks and prisoners’ escape.

The Prisons Service has further reminded prison administrators of the steady increase in attacks on security personnel that have led to loss of lives and theft of guns.

The Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine said that the directives have been sent to all concerned authorities to be on alert with the World Cup excitement to avoid any repercussions.

Baine said that the commencement of the World Cup tournament and its excitement may result into prisoners’ escape and theft of guns since there is an increase of attacks on security personnel leading to loss of lives and theft of guns across the country.

Baine said that all Prison Services staff must report on duty without phones which can distract the attention and interference with the level prison alertness.

Prison authorities have also been implored to enhance the security of prisoners to and from courts, hospitals, and labour and the safety of guns must be taken as a top priority.
