KAMPALA- Brig. General Flavia Byekwaso has been appointed the new Uganda People’s Defense Forces spokesperson. She replaces Brig Gen Richard Karemire who has served for four years.

Byekwaso, who is also the army representative in Parliament since 2016, holds a Bachelor of Business Admnistration and Master of Public Admnistration and Management degrees from Makerere University.

Her profile on Uganda Parliament website says the 48-year-old joined the army in 2000 where she started as a protocol officer.  Other posts she has held include military assistant and logistics officer and administrative officer. She has also served as the director of logistics for the force.

She was promoted to Brigadier General in 2019, becoming the second-highest-ranking female army officer after Lt General Proscovia Nalweyiso.

At the height of agitation to amend the constitution to remove the age limit to allow President Yoweri Museveni to stand again after clocking 75-years of age, Brig-Gen Byekwaso told the media she was more concerned about the UPDF Act – which “doesn’t set any age limitations. That is why we have generals who are above 80…”

The army block voted affirmatively for the removal of the age limit.

Meanwhile, Karemire has been assigned at the East African Community Secretariat as the Defense Liaison Officer, he said in a tweet.

“I look forward to working on Integration as the solution for our strategic security,” Karemire said.
