NUP leaders in Kigezi request EC to engage Police, RDCs over harrasment of party members in 2021

MBARARA- Leaders for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the Kigezi sub-region have asked the Electoral Commission officials to engage the RDCs and police over harassment of its members in the forthcoming general election.

Jasper Ayebare the NUP Chief Coordinator in the Kigezi sub-region said that last week 9 of their members were arrested as they were in Kanungu district to vet flag bears, giving out membership cards and collecting signatures to allow Kyagulanyi to contest for the presidential seat in 2021 but they were disrupted by police.

He noted that NUP as Political party should be allowed space to converse for support and fairly compete in the elections noting that most opposition parties have not been allowed to compete fairly in elections.

Addressing the media at party offices here in Mbarara city Jolly Mugisha the Deputy President for western region says that all campaign materials such as t-shirts, posters, membership cards were confiscated by security officials during arrest which she said it violates their rights.

Jolly is now appealing the electoral commission to direct police to release their campaign materials with immediate effect as they are heading general elections.
