NEWS- The Police in Namayingo district are investigating the circumstances under which a twenty-five-year old finished his life in a police cell.
The deceased is Kennedy Mwimo, a resident of Maruba village in Buhemba sub county, Namayingo district who hanged himself in police cells on Friday night October 16th 2020.
James Mubi, the Busoga East police spokesperson says, the deceased used his trousers to commit suicide, by strangling himself inside the police cell at Maruba Police Station.
It is alleged that on Wednesday, Mwimo battered and attempted to rape his 56 year old mother whose names have been withheld.
The victim cried for help and was rescued by community responders who arrived at the scene if crime. They then alerted police who came and arrested Mwimo.
Mwimo was detained at Maruba police station on two counts of assault and domestic violence. Mubi confirms the incident adding that, the victim had requested police to initiate reconciliation meetings between her and Mwimo.
“The victim had preferred to reconcile with her son through police and other family elders, but it is unfortunate that Mwimo took his own life,” he says.
Mubi adds that the body of the deceased has since been taken to Namayingo health center IV mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
